Marble Cleaning, Care and Maintenance

April 21, 2016DianeTiling Tips

Marble is a beautiful type of stone that can be easily crafted into anything. It is used in construction of floors, countertops and accents on different furniture. It is a soft stone that comes in a wide range of colors and patterns. Despite its beautiful natural soft material, it is important to know how to take care of it. Many people have opted to use marble in their home décor but have difficulties in maintaining it. One should learn about its basic maintenance, tips on keeping the marble polished and its stain removal process. Below are a few things one has to know about the marble care and maintenance.

5 things to know about marble cleaning, care and maintenance

  1. Protect the marble from scratches; if you have installed marble floors or walls, make sure your chairs or table legs are padded. For marble countertops, use coasters and mats. This helps protect them from glasses and other appliances set on it. Marble has to remain smooth and shiny.
  2. Frequent cleaning; marble picks up stains very quickly. If coffee, wine or juice spill was to remain untouched for a period of time, a stain will form. Installers of any marble design are advised to clean any kind of spillage immediately.
  3. Wiping; marble is well known for its soft and shiny appearance. When cleaning, do not scrub with a hard substance. Instead use a damp cloth to wipe off dust and spills. Scrubbing leads to scratches. Wipe the floor or countertops in a circular motion to maintain the smooth surface. Ensure the surfaces cleaned are clean and dry by running another dry cloth on the floors and countertops.
  4. The right detergents; use a natural light soap or marble cleaner. This is done by diluting the soap in warm water and cleaning the surfaces with a soft cloth. Vinegar is a good cleaning agent but due to its acidity it can cause corrosion on the marble. However, if installers designed their floors and countertops with light marbles, they can use hydrogen peroxide to clean it.
  5. Shining the marble; due to frequent cleaning, marbles can acquire a dull appearance. Use a chamois cloth to dry and shine your marble surfaces at the same time. The chamois cloth is a soft fabric.

Conclusion

Marble floors come with a lot of responsibilities in order to keep them smooth and shiny. One should be able to maintain, care and clean marble stones as soon as they install them.
